SCIATICA

Sciatica or sciatic pain is a term used to describe pain into the buttock or leg. The pain can vary in severity. The pain can be sharp and shooting, achy, burning or even numb. These are simply some of the symptoms that are associated with a compression of the Sciatic nerve somewhere along its path. Hence the name Sciatica. For some people the pain increases with activity and reduces with rest and for others the exact reverse is true.

This nerve compression generally happens at one of following locations:

· The PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE directly on the Sciatic nerve. Called Piriformis syndrome.

· At the NERVE ROOT as the nerve exits the spine.

Home help.

For Piriformis Muscle tightness stretches are appropriate and recommended.

This muscle is a rotator of the leg. The preferred stretch should be conducted in a manner which does not affect the lower back and not held for too long and repeated often. After stretching light activity should be easier.

Where to next?

If stretching does not resolve the sciatica within a few weeks it is likely the lower back needs to be examined. This type of condition is routinely dealt with by a Chiropractor. A Doctor of Chiropractic is skilled in the analysis and treatment of such conditions.

Once assessed, we usually find that it is easily dealt with and if cared for correctly full healing can be achieved.

As with most conditions the sooner you get treatment the sooner you can halt the damage.

So if you or someone you know is experiencing sciatica why not get a thorough examination to get to the underlying cause.
